Closed Wound Drainage System is a medical device, used to drain wounds of fluids, blood, and other foreign material that builds up in the area of the body after surgery. Closed wound drainage system helps to prevent infection and hematomas, therefore enhancing wound healing, reducing inflammation, and providing pain relief. It is a bulb-shaped device connected to a tube.

PRODUCT USAGE
Proper placement of drainage systems is crucial for optimal function. The closed-wound drainage system has a thin flexible tube attached to a squeezable container. One end of the tube is placed into the patient’s surgical site through a small opening near the incision where the fluid is building up. The other end is attached to the bulb. When the bulb is squeezed, a constant gentle suction is created which draws out the excess fluids. Keep in mind that the bulb should be compressed at all times, except when you’re emptying the drainage.

How often should the wound drainage kits be changed?
The closed-wound drainage may be left in place for longer than 1 week. Drainage must be emptied and measured regularly to maintain maximum suction. We recommend checking the amount of fluid in the container every 2 to 4 hours and empty it when the container is half full, or every 8 hours.
How do I empty the bulb?
Follow these steps: 1. Wash your hands; 2. Unplug the stopper on top of the bulb and empty the fluid into the measuring cup by squeezing the bulb; 3. Clean the cap with an alcohol wipe; 4. Squeeze the container and hold it flat. While it’s flat, put the cap back on; 5. Measure how much fluid you collected and flush the fluid down the toilet.
What color of the drainage is normal?
The first couple of days after surgery, the fluid may be a dark red color. This is normal. As you continue to heal, it may look pink or pale yellow.
Why is there no drainage?
Sometimes string-like clots clump together in the tubing which blocks the flow of drainage. In this case, we recommend calling your doctor and ask for advice.
