An Elastic Cohesive Bandage, also known as a Self-Adhering Bandage, is a type of bandage or wrap that adheres to itself while not adhering to skin or hair. An Elastic Adhesive Bandage includes an adhesive for maximum compression but should only be applied once. Both cohesive and adhesive elastic bandages provide increased compression compared to plain or crepe dry bandages, but must be applied carefully so not to wrap too tightly causing interference with circulation. However, when applied correctly, cohesive and adhesive bandages do not loosen over time providing a more consistent, long-term level of compression.

The advantage of a cohesive bandage, compared to an adhesive bandage, is that the material sticks to itself without a coating of adhesive making the bandage removable, washable, and will not stick to skin or hair.
Adhesive elastic bandages are available in various materials, including light-weight spandex + cotton, stretch composite, and heavy-weight high-twist cotton, to meet the needs of injuries that require the highest level of long-term compression. The advantage of an adhesive bandage, compared to a cohesive bandage, is that the adhesive ensures the bandage does not loose compression over time. However, this type of bandage is non-removable, non-washable, and can only be used once.

What are the basics of using an adhesive bandage?
1) Understand the purpose of the bandage: Do you require a plain, crepe, cohesive or adhesive bandage?

What is the difference between a cohesive bandage and an adhesive bandage?
A cohesive elastic bandage is made of a material that has natural cohesion properties without an adhesive coating. Cohesive bandages can also be washed, but only until the cohesion is lost at which point a new bandage should be applied.
An adhesive elastic bandage is usually made of a heavier material with an adhesive coating for maximum compression retention. Adhesive bandages cannot be reused or washed.
What if I am allergic to latex?
Generally, cohesive and adhesive are not latex-free. However, latex-free bandages are available such as our Heavy-weight UltraGuard adhesive bandage. Consult a medical professional for other bandage solutions if allergic to latex.
